When algoriddim contacted me just before Musikmesse about another video project for the next release of djay pro, I was surprised as v1 had just come out. But when I found out what was coming, I totally understood. Because the supposed entry level Mac only app really deserves a seat at the top table, because djay Pro 1.1 now works with the latest Pioneer players, 320K Spotify files, and has vjay for iOS's video features built right in too. And there's an Apple Watch app too.

There's a lot to talk about here. The first is djay pro working with Pioneer players. Not all of them you understand, but the Pioneer Pioneer CDJ-2000nexus, CDJ-900nexus, and XDJ-1000 are supported. I had the XDJs to work with for the video, and it was a simple plug and play exercise, and while I only (only haha) had a pair, it looks like you can use and configure four decks.

Setup was easy — USB from each deck to my MacBook Pro was all that was needed, and I used RCAs from the XDJs to the DJM. It all works pretty well too. And while there are still some glitches to iron out, responsiveness is bang on the money, and being able to work with all the features including slip mode is more than I had hoped for. I had expected a worse experience than I had, but for the first incarnation of this support, I'm throughly impressed.

The best bit is that you can funnel your Spotify files (in glorious 320kps) into the CDJs as well, including artwork and waveforms. There's a delay while the waveform is built, and the XDJ display isn't as detailed, but it does work. The thing to remember is that djay is linked to both players, so if you scroll on one player, the Mac screen moves and this is also reflected on the other player too. This is much the same as they Numark NV and Kontrol S8 too, and is a limitation of the technology used to feed info from the laptop to the screens.

But in use, it's still as good as using local files, albeit slower to get the full waveform experience, unless of course you've used the Spotify tracks before, in which case the waveforms are stored on your hard drive, as are cue points, and usefully there are now a full eight of them, a nod to the growing range of controllers being added. Numark and Denon users rejoice!

Last but not least is video. It's an area that still wallows on the outer edges of DJ popularity, but is great to see finally making it into the Mac version. And it's certainly ticking a lot of boxes, with the ability to mix and record in HD, as well as audio and visual effects, with text and image overlays is very nice indeed. The cherry on the top is the ability to do all this with controllers and other hardware. Yes, you can even use the listed Pioneer gear to scratch video. If this is v1.1, I can't wait to see v2.

I get algoriddim making this. It's an Apple device, and they have versions of djay for all the others so why not this one too? I think this more about 'because we can' rather than aiming to replace conventional gear. I certainly don't ever see djay for Apple Watch getting plugged into a controller. It's probably best to view it as fun with potential accessory style uses (big airhorn button?), but I really can't see it causing many, if any DJs to ditch their controller any time soon. So don't get all bent out of shape about it — a kid with an Apple Watch is not taking your regular gig. But is could be helpful to use alongside the regular djay.

Apple Watch aside, djay Pro now absolutely deserves to me taken seriously by a great many more people. Kingdom rush origins - tower defense for mac. If the likes of Pioneer are opening up so wide that algoriddim can have a bash at their pro players, then that's a testament as to how well regarded it is as apps go. It has all the key features necessary for DJs of all levels, and will only see them develop. I can only think that a Windows version would be very welcome, and the final icing on the cake being DVS.
